European Hornet Conclusions

  • European Hornets are aggressive.

  • They may be seen flying to lights at night.

  • The average person ought not to do anything to their nests.

  • Nests get very large later in the season.

  • Warmest weather makes them much more aggressive and likely to be easily agitated.

Aggression

Aggression varies with the season. They are predators. They are naturally aggressive. They are aggravated by fast or erratic movements or noises near them. If you aggravate them they do demonstrate little tolerance and they appear to be totally fearless. Once an attack near the nest begins they tend to act as a coordinated group with a swarming attack.

Typically a few stings only hurts, but a swarming attack is dangerous. We are professionals and we still attempt to minimize swarming attacks.

It would be unwise for any non-professional to attempt to remove a nest like the one you've just seen.
